What Is Conversion Tracking? A Plain-English Guide
Conversion tracking is the process of recording desired actions—such as leads, purchases, sign-ups, or other outcomes—and connecting those actions to marketing activity where possible.
Why marketers track conversions
Clicks tell you traffic arrived. Conversions tell you whether that traffic produced an outcome. Connecting the two helps compare campaigns and channels using business-relevant events.
A basic tracking flow
A person encounters marketing, visits a site or funnel, performs an action, and a measurement system records the event with whatever campaign or user context it can observe.
Tracking versus attribution
Tracking asks whether an event happened and captures context. Attribution asks which marketing interaction should receive credit. They are related but not identical.
Why numbers disagree
Different systems can use different identifiers, attribution windows, models, browser or device signals, and event definitions. Two platforms can therefore report different totals or credit.
When dedicated software helps
As paid-media and funnel measurement become more complex, a dedicated attribution platform can provide a more campaign-centered view than general analytics alone.
