UTM Tracking Guide: Naming, Governance & Reporting

UTM tracking fails more often because of inconsistent naming than because the parameters themselves are technically difficult.

Create a controlled vocabulary

Decide exactly how sources and media will be named, including capitalization and separators.

Separate campaign and creative identity

Use campaign for the initiative and content for the ad or link variation when that reflects your reporting needs.

Avoid personal or sensitive data

Do not place sensitive information in URLs. Query parameters can appear in browser history, analytics logs, server logs, and shared links.

Document ownership

Assign responsibility for naming rules so every team does not invent a separate taxonomy.

Audit regularly

Look for duplicate spellings, mixed case, accidental spaces, and values that should be consolidated.
