How Conversion Tracking Works: Events, Identifiers & Attribution

Conversion tracking looks simple from the outside—record a click and a sale—but reliable measurement depends on several layers working together.

1. A marketing interaction happens

The system may observe a click, campaign parameter, ad identifier, referring source, or another acquisition signal.

2. An identifier connects activity

Cookies, first-party identifiers, click IDs, account data, or other mechanisms may help connect later behavior to the earlier interaction.

3. A conversion event is recorded

A purchase, lead, registration, phone sale, or other event needs a clear definition and a reliable method of being sent to the measurement system.

4. Attribution rules assign credit

If multiple interactions occurred, an attribution model determines which touchpoint or combination of touchpoints receives credit.

5. Reports turn events into decisions

Campaign data becomes useful when it can be compared against spend, revenue, funnel progression, or other business outcomes.
